Summary

A charmingly quirky seaside town offers a recently separated restauranteur a fresh start and possibly a new lease on love in A Season for Second Chances, by the author of The Twelve Dates of Christmas

Annie Sharpe's spark for life has fizzled out。 Her kids are grown up, her restaurant is doing just fine on its own, and her twenty-six-year marriage has come to an unceremonious end。 Untethered for the first time in her adult life, she finds a winter guardian position in a historic seaside home and decides to leave her city life behind for a brand-new beginning。

When she arrives in Willow Bay, Annie is enamored by the charming house, the invigorating sea breeze, and the town's rich seasonal traditions。 Not to mention, her neighbors receive her with open arms--that is, all except the surly nephew of the homeowner, whose grand plans for the property are at odds with her residency。 As Christmas approaches, tensions and tides rise in Willow Bay, and Annie's future seems less and less certain。 But with a little can-do spirit and holiday magic, the most difficult time of her life will become。。。a season for second chances。

Perfect winter read。 Cozy and entertaining with lovable characters

A season for dildos。。。OMG this book made me LOL so hard I was rolling off my couch。 It’s technically a romance since it does include a relationship with a HEA, but IMO it sits in a hilarious literary fiction spot。The story follows Annie, who is a top chef in London。 After a grueling service, she realizes she left her phone at her restaurant。 She walks in to find her husband and business partner, Max, tasting his way through one of her wait staff。 After countless affairs, this marriage has truly A season for dildos。。。OMG this book made me LOL so hard I was rolling off my couch。 It’s technically a romance since it does include a relationship with a HEA, but IMO it sits in a hilarious literary fiction spot。The story follows Annie, who is a top chef in London。 After a grueling service, she realizes she left her phone at her restaurant。 She walks in to find her husband and business partner, Max, tasting his way through one of her wait staff。 After countless affairs, this marriage has truly spoiled, and Annie decides to reboot her life。She takes on a winter guardian position in a seaside home where she meets a plethora of towns folk that will have you in stitches and in tears。 Annie reopens the teashop and warms her way into the community and the landlord, John’s heart。The book is over 400 pages and I think it could’ve been tighten up to keep the pace up, BUT it is pack with so much enjoyment including:☕️ Artisan coffee🤥 Dildo connoisseurs 📚 A Victorian book club🎃🎄Halloween and Christmas celebrations😼 A rude cat👅 Hilarious foreplay🪄 A town with a cursed past🍟 Lots of pub foodThe spice level is really low as the story really focuses on the dissolution of Annie’s marriage and her flirting with John。 There are some great makeout scenes but the chapter where Annie receives a dildo from her book club might be my favourite chapter this year。 Bayliss is a skilled comedic writer。I would definitely take a second chance on anything Bayliss writes。 。。。more

This was cute。 I wish it were marketed more as an adult woman re-building her life after a separation, in a new cozy seaside town with her book club and holiday festivities rather than as a romance; since that aspect came extremely late into plot and was very light。 Sharper than her first book, which I enjoyed。

I don’t normally go for romance stories but was looking for something light and still a little bit brain stretching。 Ell Potter’s lilting British accent enhances Annie’s wit and John’s dry sense of humor carrying the story through causing me not to listen to the audiobook nonstop to the end。 Even if you aspects were totally predictable, it was the laugh out loud moments (and there are some REALLY great ones!) that were the clincher to make me love this story。 I didn’t want to leave the character I don’t normally go for romance stories but was looking for something light and still a little bit brain stretching。 Ell Potter’s lilting British accent enhances Annie’s wit and John’s dry sense of humor carrying the story through causing me not to listen to the audiobook nonstop to the end。 Even if you aspects were totally predictable, it was the laugh out loud moments (and there are some REALLY great ones!) that were the clincher to make me love this story。 I didn’t want to leave the characters of Willow Bay behind and it was a satisfying listen all the way around。 。。。more

This was a great, seasonal heartwarming story to read at the start of the holidays。 It wasn’t what I was expected, but I really enjoyed rooting for Annie’s success and learning more about the charming town of Willow Bay。 The sense of community and simplicity of the town dynamics throughout the story was refreshing。 I wish the book had featured the ex-husband, Max, less but it was good to see Annie grow through each encounter。

I loved the first book from this author, but this one was too slow to keep my interest。 The characters and love connection fell flat。

4 stars。 I liked this book way more than I was expecting。 Quick, cute, fun seasonal read (not Christmas/winter holiday, I would consider it more fall)。 I’ve spent a lot of time lately with dense heavy fantasy books and this was a great change。 Finished it all in one day。

Melanie

Thank God I had this break to finish this one。 I loved it。 Complete comfort read with her own style to the characters and story。 A fall read-not a Christmas read—just FYI。 Loved Annie and rooting for them all。

Read this while on vacation in the mountains and it was such a cozy holiday read! I have seen some reviews that disliked that a lot of the book was made up of Annie meeting the people around Willow Bay, but honestly I loved all of the detail that was included。 Annie and all of the characters were very relatable and with all of the details about their lives and involvement in the town it added much needed backstory that made you feel like you were in the town too。 I would love to see this become Read this while on vacation in the mountains and it was such a cozy holiday read! Lets start this book off with a bang, haha, and a cheating husband。 Annie has had enough that her husband Max is cheating。。。AGAIN。。。 She decides shes leaving。 She's leaving the business she used her inheritance to build and heads to Willow Bay after answering an ad to keep a property for a little old lady。 The nephew of the little old lady does not want the property kept, John would like to sell it。 He and Annie butt heads, while Max keeps popping up but also develop real feelings for each other Lets start this book off with a bang, haha, and a cheating husband。 Annie has had enough that her husband Max is cheating。。。AGAIN。。。 She decides shes leaving。 She's leaving the business she used her inheritance to build and heads to Willow Bay after answering an ad to keep a property for a little old lady。 The nephew of the little old lady does not want the property kept, John would like to sell it。 He and Annie butt heads, while Max keeps popping up but also develop real feelings for each other。 Max finally wraps his head around they're not getting back together and Annie and John move forward。 。。。more

I’ve absolutely loved this book!! The only part I didn’t like is that the main character is 44 yrs old and throughout the book they make it seem like 44 is so so old。 But, I can get over that bc it’s just so warm and cozy。

What I Liked:• the character development of Annie and John, separately and together romantically• the descriptive text to really create a mental setting for each chapter• the ex Max being factored in and trying to woo Annie when John does nothing to woo her and she falls for him so fast lol • the small/short chapter styleWhat I Disliked:• how Mari kind of went on a back burner for the last half of the book• how John Granger didn’t really even make an appearance until almost halfway through the b What I Liked:• the character development of Annie and John, separately and together romantically• the descriptive text to really create a mental setting for each chapter• the ex Max being factored in and trying to woo Annie when John does nothing to woo her and she falls for him so fast lol • the small/short chapter styleWhat I Disliked:• how Mari kind of went on a back burner for the last half of the book• how John Granger didn’t really even make an appearance until almost halfway through the book• the ending seemed a little abrupt with the deal being made and Annie and John’s relationship being official after he STARES DEATH IN THE EYES? Cute book to start the holiday season。 A little too long for a light, chick lit book, but enjoyable。

Despite the wintery cover and "season" being in the title, this is not a holiday story。 It is set during the off-season in a seaside village so if you are looking for winter stories, this would be a good one to add to your list。 I enjoyed the characters。 There is a bit of romance, but this book isn't steamy。 It is more about a woman starting again after finally having enough of her husband cheating on her。 Full review soon。 Despite the wintery cover and "season" being in the title, this is not a holiday story。 It is set during the off-season in a seaside village so if you are looking for winter stories, this would be a good one to add to your list。 I enjoyed the characters。 There is a bit of romance, but this book isn't steamy。 It is more about a woman starting again after finally having enough of her husband cheating on her。 Full review soon。 。。。more

This book has such likable characters and a great atmosphere but…。 What in plot’s name? It’s about 200 pages longer than it needs to be and lacks real plot development。 Such a let down because 12 dates was cute。

BOOK REVIEW - A SEASON FOR SECOND CHANCESDrink rec: Cranberry Moscow MuleThis book felt a lot like a Hallmark movie to me, especially in the sense that with Hallmark movies you can have them playing in the background and still get a sense for what is going on in the book。 But, unlike a Hallmark movie, it had little romance and wasn’t too centered around the holidays…definitely more focused on the theme of starting fresh in a small seaside town。I read the authors other book, The Twelve Dates of C BOOK REVIEW - A SEASON FOR SECOND CHANCESDrink rec: Cranberry Moscow MuleThis book felt a lot like a Hallmark movie to me, especially in the sense that with Hallmark movies you can have them playing in the background and still get a sense for what is going on in the book。 But, unlike a Hallmark movie, it had little romance and wasn’t too centered around the holidays…definitely more focused on the theme of starting fresh in a small seaside town。I read the authors other book, The Twelve Dates of Christmas, last year and definitely enjoyed that one more than this book。 However, if you’re looking for a lighter book about a woman going through a divorce who decides to rent a seaside home and finds some ✨romance✨ along the way, then this one would be for you! It’s got cozy small town gives, quirky characters, and some funny moments。I totally got suckered in because the cover of this book is to die for😍 but I think this month I’ve realized that the second chance romance trope isn’t my fav, especially if the pacing is slower 🤷🏻‍♀️ That being said, if you’re all about second chances, you might wanna give this one a try! 。。。more

While a little slow to start, I really liked this story of Annie and her own second chance。 After finding her husband with another woman, Annie takes a house sitting position and finds herself in the process。 I adored the community and friendships in this book。 I loved watching how real it was to see Annie waver and then hold strong when it comes to her choices and I loved John。 While definitely a holiday read, this book is just a warm, fun hug when I needed it。

If you follow me, you know I don’t like to rate a book low and you also know that it pains me to say anything less-than-positive because I understand two things: (1) this is someone’s baby (the author), and (2) it will absolutely be someone’s cup of tea。 So, here’s what I liked:🎄Love a holiday theme and especially one on a wintery beach locale。 🎄Enjoy the “starting over” vibes and strong female characters 🎄Mari - enough said! Charming and cozy, like the book equivalent of a steaming and comforting bowl of tomato soup on a dark winter’s day。 A Season for Second Chances features a quaint town full of quirky characters and is the perfect holiday romp with the right touch of humor。 Just the balm that I needed this week。

This is a comfy comic Christmas read which is great to curl up with a cup of cocoa。Annis has had enough of her cheating husband and decides to spread her wings without him。 However, as she is accepted into into her community of Saltwater Nook her new life does not run smoothly。Yes this may seem predictable but its all the interesting details along the way that makes this an interesting read。。 curl up and enjoy

As soon as I saw this book, I knew I had to read it ASAP because I loved The Twelve Dates of Christmas。 A Season for Second Chances is a fun, easy read, but it is not quite what I expected going in。 This book does have romance, but the story is more about friendships and the town that Annie moves to after splitting from her husband。 I was hoping for another feel-good Christmas book, and while Christmas is in this book, it covers the span of several months and is not what I would call a Christmas As soon as I saw this book, I knew I had to read it ASAP because I loved The Twelve Dates of Christmas。 A Season for Second Chances is a fun, easy read, but it is not quite what I expected going in。 This book does have romance, but the story is more about friendships and the town that Annie moves to after splitting from her husband。 I was hoping for another feel-good Christmas book, and while Christmas is in this book, it covers the span of several months and is not what I would call a Christmas piece。 Because of the cover and the description on the back, I thought this book would be more like Bayliss’s first book, but again, this book is more about relationships and self love than it is romance。 While the Twelve Dates of Christmas is a true holiday rom-com perfect for people in their twenties and early thirties, this new book feels geared to a slightly older audience。 Annie is a middle-aged woman with two grown children and is facing a divorce after 26 years of marriage。 While the story is heartwarming, I didn’t really get into it until about halfway when Annie begins to have feelings for John。 I wanted more romance and felt at times like the story was a bit too slow。 Overall, though, it is a good story, just different from what I expected。 。。。more
